Witch-Hair [wich – hair] noun: An annoying, unsightly, black hair on the chin or neck. May bring friends, show up out-of-nowhere, and stay until evicted.
In my late 20’s, I thought it was a fluke. This one random, aggravating little hair that would grow faster than any other hair on my body. I pluck, then 2 days later my kids could swing from it. It’s amazing. Now that I’m in my late 30’s it takes 6 months to grow an inch of hair on my head. It takes 1 day for the hair on my face! So, while shopping at Ulta the other day, I picked up the Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane kit for $9.99 with the hopes of a quick eradication. I had family coming in for my daughter’s high school graduation and no time to sit and pluck with a 10x magnifying mirror. This girl’s got things to do.
When I walked into the store, I was actually looking for a set of Tinkle Eyebrow Razors. They are super cheap, come in a set of 3 or 6 and have fun, pastel colors. Ulta was either sold out or don’t carry them anymore so I opted for the next best thing.
Finishing Touch makes all sorts of hair remover tools from battery operated face and leg shavers, eyebrow shapers, to epilators. That’s the device that pulls the hair out with coils and makes you want to slap your neighbor. Reviews are often VERY mixed with all Finishing Touch products.
That evening, it was time to open it up and give it a whirl. My face was clean and makeup free with no emollients or moisturizers. My first thought – besides “Why do they make it so damn hard to get into the package?” was that the handles felt nice, sturdy, and easy to control. In the set, you get 4 blades. 2 are long blades (2 inch) and designed for the face. The other 2 are short blades (1 inch) and designed for the brows. All come with a safety top for safe storage. The handles have a rubberized grip that is comfortable in the hands – something that is important to avoid the accidental slice & dice.
The blades are sharp, but not nearly as sharp as they should be. Instead of gliding through thick brow follicles, they sort of grab and pull. After a few attempts, the blade does the job, albeit poorly. My skin beneath my brow was left feeling raw and sore.
The facial blades are about the same, but slide through the thin, peach fuzz on my cheek like a whisper. Once they connected with the sporadic witch-hair on my chin, it was back to tugging and discomfort.
According to the packaging, the Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane kit is more marketed as an “anti-aging” product than a hair remover, but let’s be real – if they’re gonna include blades specifically for brows then it should work for brow hairs! Sure, the blades cut through peach fuzz, but they’re nearly dull right out of the package. That is unacceptable quality. As far as the witch-hair goes, he’s still planted safely and securely between my chins. Annoying little bugger. If the guillotine is what you’re after, look elsewhere than the Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane kit.
Instead, pick up the Tinkle Brow Shavers set. They are sharp, cheap, and worth every penny! $4 for a set of 6.
