On Monday, September 5th my husband and I decided to begin a vegetarian diet. I don’t want to be super strict, as I revolve my life around cheese and other dairy products. So, we agreed to have some cheese products but no eggs, milk or butter. This is a big stretch for me and I fear I wouldn’t be able to do it. However; after the 4th day, we decided to step it up. WAY UP!

We started an organic fruit and veggie juice fast. So, I thought it would be easier or at the very least, interesting if I documented the experience here. If anything, it might promote or completely repulse any curious readers out there.

So here we go with my entry for Day 1.

Day 1 – Friday September 9th, 2011:

Where is all this poo coming from??!!! I’ve gone no less than 15 times and it’s noon. When will it stop? Will it stop? I’m going to yahoo answers after this to post the question.

I had some juice last night for dinner, and then again for breakfast this morning, snack, lunch- you get the picture. All organic grown fruits and vegetables purchased from Whole Foods. I’m not planning it out too much and not wanting to over complicate the process. It’s supposed to be simple, KISS method. Keep It Simple Stupid. We’ve got every type of vegetable imaginable. Some that I’ve never seen in person before mixed, some that I’ve never heard of and then some old favorites.

Physically, I feel ok. I’m a bit hungry right now but it’s not bad. I wouldn’t mind a hamburger, or two or three. Going to take a nap I think. Hope I don’t shit myself! 😉

Day 2 – Saturday September 10th, 2011:

Well, in all honesty this has not been bad at all. I’m really not that hungry. If I am, I take a few sips of my juice and go about my business. I weighed myself this morning when I first woke up. The scale said I lost 2 pounds since yesterday. I’m sure that weight came out the rear end. I’m not really excited about the weight loss because it’s way too early to lose anything but water. In a week, then I should be able to start seeing a difference. I’m very excited about that part!

I worked out this morning as usual -my normal 1-2 miles and felt great. When I feel a little dizzy, I just adjust my pace and take it slow. This process of fasting is really easy. I totally expected to be sick and nauseated during the first 3 days. The hardest part of this is 1. finding room in the fridge for all the veggies and fruit and 2. making the juice in the sucky juicer we bought. It’s going back to Wal-Mart asap. If anyone is interested, it’s the Jack Lalanne Power Juicer. It Sucks Ass! The last thing that makes this diet hard is that I cook regular food for my 2 children and it smells soooo good. Last night I cooked them shrimp quesadillas with sautéed Vidalia onions, red bell pepper, cheddar and pepperjack cheese. Avocado and fresh tomato on top. OMG!!!!

Ok- back to reality. Yum. Juice….

Day 3 – Sunday September 11, 2011

Last night I had a hard time. My husband went to bed early and I stayed up thinking about pita bread and cheese. I was seriously considering quitting. I began searching the internet for reasons why I shouldn’t be doing this juice fast, instead of reasons why I should. I stayed strong though and am proud to say that I’m still in the game. I woke up this morning with a lot of energy. My Dad and I walked almost 2 miles together and I kept pace without a problem.

My husband has been having several detox symptoms which has made his life hell. Plus he’s had to work all weekend, which adds to the misery. He is off tomorrow and Tuesday so he will be able to rest then. I figured he would have more severe symptoms than me. He lives for McDonald’s and Coke. It was not out of the ordinary for him to eat there 3 times a week. If I cooked something healthy like, I don’t know- chicken salad, he would go to McDonald’s. He’s been very anti-veggie until now and always considered potato chips or french fries as a vegetable. He’s lost 10 pounds so far. Not since we started the fast, but since we switched to vegetarian eating, so 7 days ago. He has 60 pounds to lose but wants to lose 80. I think that would be too thin for him.

I am trying to lose around 15 pounds at the most. I’m a size 12 at the moment, sometimes a 14 but am very happy as a healthy size 10.

Anyway, That’s about all I have for today. I feel good! I would love to have regular food but after a few sips of juice I’m able to refocus.

Wednesday September 14, 2011 – 

Just wanted to do a quick update. I completely aborted the juice fast Monday morning and for good reason. While the diet may be great for some and provide many healthy benefits, I just find it incredibly expensive and just plain wasteful. Let me elaborate…

I purchased one week of groceries consisting of nothing but organic fruits and vegetables for 2 people plus a juice machine. It takes roughly $150 to purchase a decent juicer, which I somehow neglected to do. Then, $150 of actual produce for about 3.5 days- 4- 12 oz. meals per day. That’s $300 per week for produce alone. Plus, I have 2 children to cook for. That is an additional grocery expense. It is a HUGE amount of food that no one could store in one refrigerator.

Using the juicer, it takes roughly 10 large veg/fruit to make 2 meals and the pulp is discarded. The pulp (IMO) is a very important part of the fruit and is just wasted or put into the garden as compost. Not to mention, the pulp is filling! At the end of the day, I’ve purchased enough fruit and vegetables to feed my family for 2 weeks at least, but as a juice – only 7 days for 2 people.

And, let me add that if you are thinking that it’s soooo easy just to make juice for every meal, you are wrong. It is messy and very time consuming. Juice goes everywhere, pulp goes everywhere, cleaning the machine between meals is a hassle. Did I mention it’s messy?

Yes, I did benefit from juicing. I did lose 4 pounds and amazingly have kept it off. However; it is just not economically feasible.
